How to Fix Render-Blocking Resources in WordPress (CSS and JavaScript)

If PageSpeed Insights warns you to “eliminate render-blocking resources”, it means some CSS or JavaScript files stop the browser from showing your page until they download and process. Fixing this usually improves how fast content appears.

What is a render-blocking resource?

When a browser reads your HTML and finds a stylesheet or a normal script in the head, it generally pauses rendering until that file is loaded. Those files are render-blocking. CSS is blocking by default; scripts are blocking unless marked otherwise.

Why WordPress sites often have them

  • Themes and plugins each load their own CSS and JS on every page.
  • Page builders may load large global stylesheets and scripts.
  • Third-party fonts and widgets add more requests.

How to fix it

1. Defer or async non-critical JavaScript

Adding defer lets HTML parse while scripts download and runs them afterward, in order. async runs scripts when ready, in any order. Many caching and performance plugins offer a delay or defer option; test carefully, since deferring can break some scripts.

2. Load scripts only where needed

Avoid loading slider, form or map scripts on pages that do not use them. Builders such as Tuli Builder load each element’s front-end script only on pages that use that element.

3. Inline critical CSS

Critical CSS is the minimum needed to render the above-the-fold area. Inlining it, and loading the rest asynchronously, helps content show faster. Performance plugins can generate it for you.

4. Remove unused CSS and JS

Disable plugins you do not need and avoid large frameworks you barely use.

5. Minify and combine wisely

Minify files to shrink them. Combining files matters less with modern HTTP/2 and HTTP/3.

6. Optimize fonts

Limit font families and weights, preload key fonts and use font-display: swap.

Test after every change

Deferring or delaying scripts can break menus, forms or sliders. Test key pages on desktop and mobile and re-run PageSpeed.
