How to Change Your WordPress Theme Without Breaking Your Site

This guide covers “change your wordpress theme” in plain language. Changing your WordPress theme is easy to do and easy to get wrong. A new theme can change layouts, menus, widgets and features, and some content may depend on your old theme. Follow this checklist to switch safely.

Before you switch

  1. Back up your site. Files and database. See how to back up WordPress.
  2. Note what your current theme does. Custom code in functions.php, shortcodes, widgets, custom post types or page builder content may be tied to the theme.
  3. Record your settings: menus, widget areas, logo, colors, tracking code.
  4. Check speed and key pages so you can compare afterwards.

Test on a staging site

Most good hosts offer one-click staging. Make the change there first so visitors never see a broken site.

How to change the theme

  1. In the dashboard, go to Appearance, then Themes.
  2. Click Add New Theme, search or upload the new theme, and install it.
  3. Use Live Preview to see how your site looks before activating.
  4. Click Activate.

After you activate

  • Menus: Appearance, Menus. Reassign menu locations.
  • Widgets: re-add widgets to new sidebar or footer areas.
  • Customizer or Site Editor: set logo, colors and fonts.
  • Homepage settings: Settings, Reading.
  • Custom code: move any snippets from the old theme’s functions.php into a small plugin or code snippets tool.
  • Shortcodes and builder content: if a builder was part of the old theme, those pages may need rebuilding.

Check everything

  • Home page, key pages and a few posts
  • Contact forms and checkout, if you have a store
  • Mobile layout
  • Page speed
  • Search Console for new errors in the following days

If something breaks

Switch back to your old theme from Appearance, Themes, or restore your backup.

Switching to an AI builder theme

If you are moving to Tuli, you can describe pages to the AI, or paste your existing pages’ HTML and CSS to make them editable, which makes migration far faster than rebuilding by hand. See converting HTML to WordPress.
