How to Install a WordPress Plugin (3 Easy Methods for Beginners)

This guide covers “install a wordpress plugin” in plain language. Plugins add features to WordPress, from contact forms to online stores. Installing one takes a minute. Here are three methods, from easiest to most technical, plus tips for staying safe.

Method 1: Install from the dashboard (easiest)

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
  3. Search for the plugin by name.
  4. Click Install Now, then Activate.

This installs plugins from the official WordPress plugin directory.

Method 2: Upload a zip file

Use this for premium plugins you bought elsewhere.

  1. Download the plugin’s .zip file from the vendor.
  2. Go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin, then Upload Plugin.
  3. Choose the zip and click Install Now.
  4. Click Activate Plugin.

Method 3: Install by FTP

Useful if uploads fail or the dashboard is unavailable.

  1. Unzip the plugin on your computer.
  2. Connect to your site with an FTP or SFTP client.
  3. Upload the folder to /wp-content/plugins/.
  4. In the dashboard, go to Plugins and click Activate.

After installing

  • Open the plugin’s settings page, often under Settings or its own menu item.
  • Enter license keys for premium plugins.
  • Test your site, especially forms and checkout, after activating.

Staying safe

  • Install from reputable sources. Avoid pirated or “nulled” plugins.
  • Check ratings, active installs and the last update date.
  • Keep plugins updated.
  • Delete plugins you do not use. Deactivating alone is not enough.
  • Back up before installing big plugins. See how to back up WordPress.

Troubleshooting

  • Upload size limit error: ask your host to raise the limit, or use FTP.
  • Site breaks after activation: deactivate the plugin via FTP by renaming its folder. See the white screen of death guide.
