How to Fix INP (Interaction to Next Paint) in WordPress

This guide covers “fix inp” in plain language. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how quickly a page responds when users tap, click or type. A good INP is 200 milliseconds or less. It replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Slow INP usually means too much JavaScript is blocking the browser. Here is how to fix it.

How INP works

INP looks at interactions throughout a visit and reports a value near the slowest. Each interaction has input delay, processing time and presentation delay. Anything that keeps the main thread busy makes a page feel sluggish.

Find the problem

  • Check field data in PageSpeed Insights and the Search Console Core Web Vitals report.
  • Use Chrome DevTools Performance panel to record an interaction and look for long tasks.
  • Note which interactions are slow: menus, filters, add-to-cart buttons, accordions.

Fixes

1. Reduce JavaScript

Remove plugins and scripts you do not need. Load scripts only where they are used. Builders such as Tuli Builder load an element’s script only on pages that use that element.

2. Cut third-party scripts

Chat widgets, trackers, social embeds and ad scripts are frequent culprits. Delay or remove those you do not need.

3. Break up long tasks

If you write custom JavaScript, split heavy work into smaller chunks so the browser can respond between them.

4. Shrink the DOM

Large, deeply nested pages make every update slower. See fixing excessive DOM size.

5. Avoid heavy layout work on interaction

Animations and handlers that force layout recalculation can cause delay. Prefer CSS transforms and opacity for effects.

6. Optimize forms and filters

Heavy client-side filtering over large lists can be slow. Paginate or filter on the server using AJAX filters.

7. Use better hosting and caching

Slow responses for AJAX actions hurt perceived responsiveness.

Test again

Re-test interactions after each change. Field data updates over weeks.

Fix INP FAQ

What caused INP to replace FID?

INP measures responsiveness across the whole visit, not just the first interaction, giving a fuller picture.

Do page builders hurt INP?

Heavy ones with many scripts and nested elements can. Lean output helps.
